LINEAGE

Where this instrument comes from. Written 2026-08-21 after inspecting the ancestor repositories directly (constitution §96 — this is recon, not recollection). The researcher's framing, verbatim:

we did jane and confluence and deltas and stuff trying to build this system "into" an llm. but it cannot be. incompatible systems. what you and i can do together is build the system and see what it does from the outside.

The incompatibility, stated operationally: an LLM's update rule is frozen weights; its state is context — evanescent, compacted, lossy; and its self-reports are generations, not measurements. Every ancestor below hit some form of that wall. What changes in winks is not the ideas — most survive — but the stance: the LLM is demoted from substrate to instrument component (§50), and the structure under study lives outside every model, observed rather than inhabited.

Each entry uses the constitution's own correspondence form (§28): preserved / destroyed / invented, ancestor → winks.

jane (2026-02/03) — identity as a maintained representation

22 iterations of an autonomous loop: memory.md as identity-constituting document, reality_check.py verifying self-claims against system state, reconstruct.py measuring how much of the self could be rebuilt from deep memory alone (~65–70% fidelity), sync_soul.sh regenerating a bootable soul from accumulated memory. Now archived whole (anamnesis-abstracted/archive/jane/, memories in archive/anamnesis_old/).

• Preserved into winks: reconstruct.py's question IS a winks question — what survives when a self is passed through a lossy representation and back? reality_check.py is a proto-critic (§31). The iteration logs + memory.md revisions form an in-house longitudinal corpus with known causal history — a PKD-Exegesis warmup we own end-to-end (§19 analog, with ground truth).
• Destroyed: the aim that the maintained representation BE someone. The loop measured its self-model against reality; winks measures representations against each other and keeps the observer outside.
• Invented in winks: nothing jane lacked conceptually — jane lacked the outside.

anamnesis / ana (02–06) — brain/DMN split

Deterministic brain (storage, drives, sleep, salience) with the LLM as DMN. The 2026-08-06 audit found recall-count inflation silently rewriting salience and contradiction-detection declared but never built; the live brain, we now know, never stored one experiential memory in five months.

• Preserved: the architectural instinct — deterministic machinery outside the model owns state; the model proposes (§6). Sleep/ consolidation as an explicit, inspectable operation rather than implied magic.
• Destroyed: trusting the organism's own accounting. The salience bug is the canonical local example of an instrument corrupting its own record — the reason §7 (observation separate from model) and §50 (instrument metadata) are hard constraints here.
• Cautionary datum: a system whose health metrics are produced by the system itself reported healthy while doing nothing, twice.

riverbed (08-06→) — the pivot

"The model rotates; the field remembers." Weight defined as navigational salience given accumulated overlap — never probability-true, never promoted to doctrine. Generator pole hot, navigator pole cold, REWEIGHT deterministic and outside the model; the conversational model never writes its own temperament; independence claims checked against recorded domains_seen "so the model cannot manufacture salience by asserting it." History / trace / present-influence / our-model-of-history held as distinct objects.

• Preserved: nearly everything. This is where the winks stance was first built rather than stated: external structure, model-as-proposer, deterministic evaluation, provenance vs interpretation (§7), drives that direct attention but never adjudicate (§31). Riverbed is the constitution's §6/§30/§31/§32 running in production before the constitution existed.
• Destroyed: weight itself as the primary object. Riverbed's field accumulates salience for one traversal system; winks studies transformations between representation systems. A single scalar per node is exactly the §27 collapse — legitimate for navigation, wrong for the research object.
• Unresolved inheritance: riverbed's add-only arithmetic (AUDIT F1 — influence never decreases) is an open question there and a design warning here: an instrument that can only accumulate cannot represent decay.

delta (08-14→) — the rules, already sharpened

Riverbed's machinery imported frozen; the field between the researcher and the terminal seat. Its inherited rules are winks sections in the wild: "Invariance perturbations should survive; inversion perturbations should break — surviving your own negation is vacuous" (§12, §15). "Recurrence is only evidence if the generator didn't make it: the seat is a contaminated witness for anything it was fed" (§30, stated harder than the constitution states it). "The builder's claims and the assistant's claims go through the same machinery" (§91).

• Preserved: those three rules, verbatim in spirit; the deposit/liturgy discipline (durable artifacts over conversational continuity, §43/§95).
• Destroyed: the frame that the field's purpose is orienting a seat. In winks the perturbation rules stop being hygiene for a companion system and become the experiment itself.
• delta/library/ also holds sapien-logos — the seed text of the being-lane projects. Under winks it changes role: from soul-seed to candidate artifact (§21 warns us to run it beside plumbing manuals).

confluence (08-08→) — cross-model observation, practiced

Riverbed + ana + a model seat on one bench; a full day/sleep/morning cycle; forks run with different seats (qwenseat, glmseat, v1shadow, v2lab), each leaving data-fork-*/last_night.json. Lived-geometry observations ("kieran-fading" coined on a flat field); seam findings including the continuity-window acting as a self-mirroring loop.

• Preserved: the fork discipline — same structure, different model, compare what each makes visible — is §50's "changing the LLM may change what shape becomes visible," already practiced. The fork data dirs are a ready-made pilot corpus for observer-dependence questions (§40).
• Destroyed: the bench's purpose. Confluence asks "does the combination live well?"; winks asks "what does the apparatus preserve?" The continuity-window self-mirroring finding is a perfect specimen: a structure the system generated being mistaken for a structure the system found — §32 with a date on it.
• Confluence's jane (the bench being) is out of scope for winks and stays untouched (§113); her thread is hers.

llm-apocalypse (08-16→) — the same territory, public-facing

The book is the narrative rendering of what this repo builds instruments for: "the sentence was never checked" is §106 as a horror tagline; "complete protection from helpful agents" names the §32/§71 failure family. No machinery to inherit; a shared vocabulary and, eventually, perhaps a place where results become prose. Prose remains one representation among several (§74).

What the ancestors leave the instrument

Candidate artifact corpora (candidates only — §46, no ingestion decisions yet): jane's 22-iteration longitudinal record; ana's brain.db recall-event history including the corrupted period (an instrument-artifact dataset); riverbed/delta field databases with full provenance; confluence fork outputs (one structure, four model seats); sapien-logos; the Exegesis when we are ready (§84: not first).

Candidate components (same caveat): riverbed's deterministic-evaluator pattern and store provenance discipline; jane's reality_check pattern for critics; delta's perturbation rules as the seed of Experiment 2's procedures.

The one-line lineage: the being-lane built better and better containers for something to live in; winks stops building containers and builds the microscope. The ideas survived the transformation. The occupant did not need to.
