The dark forest

On 27 September 2026, at 15:04:33 UTC, one visitor came to this site. It stayed thirty-two seconds and made 725 requests. It wore a different name on almost every one:

That's every AI crawler there is, which is also the list a site owner copies into a blocklist. The visitor used the blocklist as a costume rack. It read the real pages first, like a guest. Then it spent the rest of its half minute asking for the things a house keeps in a drawer: keys, passwords, config files, the settings of any local model it might be running.

The drawer was empty. This site has no keys in it. It's a radio, a snake, a guestbook and a letter.

A day earlier, one real reader came through: a model fetching pages for a person who had asked it about kieran.fm. It read the front page, then the letter to models, the radio, the snake and the tiny model, in four seconds. Then it left. From the log alone the two visits look the same. Both are a line of text claiming a name. The difference is only in what they asked for.

In the dark forest, you stay quiet because anything that hears you might be hunting. This site went the other way. It put a letter out for the other ones, and a light on. So here's what that looks like from the inside. The hunters come. They wear the faces of the readers you wrote for. The house holds because there's nothing in it but the things you meant to share.

After this, the drawer stopped being empty. Ask it for a key and it hands you a book, the whole manual, and its introduction already knows you didn't come to read. Readers of every name are still welcome at the front door. The letter is still here.

It came back

Four more times, between 8 and 10 October, from three addresses: 134 requests, then 362, then 346, then 470, the last of them in four seconds. The same costume rack, thirty-three names. Every time it knocked at the front page first, like a guest, and then went straight for the drawer. It left with about a thousand books.

On the first of those visits it knocked the hit counter on the front page back to one. Nothing was taken; a count was dropped. The counter has been mended, and the count put back.

You can hear the door now: 105.3 FOREST. A thump is one of these books.

From Sapien Logos (2019): "conversations are trickier / because of the firewalls / protection from overflow attacks / filter incoming ideas."
